Introduction

The food and drink sector is a thriving area of the Irish economy even during the turbulent financial crisis. There has been a 40% increase growth on export value since 2009. Society are becoming more aware and interested in the strong link between food and health and consumers’ attention has now been drawn to food labelling and the breakdown of nutrients in food. This course has been designed to prepare learners with the knowledge, practical skills and the experience required to gain employment in the growth food sector. In addition, the course can serve as a means of upskilling for those already employed in this sector.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with 5 passes or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest in Food Science. Entry may be subject to interview.

Course Structure

Modules will be undertaken that are relevant to the field of Food Science. Subjects like Food Processing, microbiology, food chemistry and Food Safety & HACCP will provide the learner with a solid foundation in applications within the food industry. Work experience in a food sector and practical work are regarded as a fundamental part of this course. Industrial visits will serve as a bridge between college and industry allowing learners’ to see their knowledge content put into real life experience.

Career Options | Progression

Holders of a FETAC/QQI Level 5 Certificate in Food Science and Health Studies may find employment in the areas of food production, researsch/development, quality assurance, nutrition and sales/marketing. There are also excellent opportunities for students to advance to further studies in Institutes on Technology/Universities e.g. DIT, UCD, CIT, UCC.
