Course details
Introduction
This course is designed to provide training for those interested in all aspects of horticulture. It equips learners with the scientific concepts, practical knowledge and skills to work in various areas of horticulture - from growing your own fruit and vegetables to designing and planting a prize winning garden. This course stresses the importance of horticultural principles in addressing many of the problems facing society today including urban flooding, soil contamination, biodiversity loss and health concerns.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate with 5 passes or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest in Horticulture. Entry may be subject to interview.

Course Structure
There is a strong emphasis on the sustainable use of natural resources throughout the course. Learners are introduced to the aesthetic, scientific and business practices that are used in different areas of horticulture: private/public gardens, garden centres, food production etc.
Career Options | Progression
Holders of a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Horticulture may progress to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture or to further studies at Institutes of Technology/Universities (e.g. in the field of Applied Biosciences or Agriculture). Alternatively, you may directly enter employment in garden centres, nurseries, landscaping and garden maintenance.
