    Course details

Innovation is essential to the sustained prosperity of the Irish economy, and as identified in the EGFSN report on Skills for Creativity, Design and Innovation (2009) there is a general need for all of enterprise to focus more explicitly on the skills they need to foster creativity, and to innovate effectively. Where absent, there is a need to adopt management approaches that are supportive of creativity and innovation focused on the business’s objectives, ensuring that employees have generic skills in areas such as communications, team-working and problem-solving that they need to participate effectively in creative and innovative endeavours, as well as work effectively with others across a wide range of disciplines.

The Certificate in Innovation for International Business Springboard course is designed to develop skills in participants which will allow them to make a significant contribution to the creativity, design and innovation potential of new and existing enterprises. An innovation is a change that creates economic value, which is generally achieved through the creation of a new or improved product or service, thereby improving the way a business operates internally to bring greater value to its customers. There is also a close link between entrepreneurship and creativity and innovation; entrepreneurial activity can be improved with an increased emphasis on creativity and design, turning inventions into innovations for markets and customers. This programme will develop skills to foster innovation management through the following modules: Technology and Innovation Management, Entrepreneurship, Enterprise & Innovation and Consumer Behaviour and Market Research.

Upon completion of this course participants should be able to examine the role of innovation and creativity and identify contemporary tools and frameworks used in the management of innovation, including managing technology, intellectual property and commercialisation of new products. They will be able to display knowledge of entrepreneurial theories, concepts, challenges and opportunities, and select and apply the most appropriate approaches. Participants will also have an understanding of the key concepts and theories of consumer behaviour, the psychology of consumers, the market research process, as well as assess the influence of background and culture on purchasing decisions. Participants will also have developed the skills to assess the prospects and managerial implications of existing, new and emerging technologies and how these can be best supported by an innovation and technology strategy to build competitive advantage.

This requires the use of a wide range of assessment methods and instruments involving an appropriate balance of formative and summative assessment methods linked to the flexible learning methodologies employed by our lecturers. Above all, the assessment methods aim to assess ability to demonstrate the attainment of learning outcomes over the entire programme. This is particularly suited to adult learners who can use learning achieved in a work-based environment and apply it to the academic elements of this programme.
