Course details
This course will aim to prepare participants for work with people in the sports, coaching, and recreation or leisure industries. The sports and recreation graduate will gain the social, communication and leadership skills to work with individuals and groups in the growing sports coaching and health and fitness areas. Many of the skills acquired will be transferable for use in business or community development settings. Sports and Recreation Studies will lay a foundation for these skills and provide the work experience to put learning into practice.
This course will combine sports and coaching expertise with a study of science for the growing sports science area. This course also aims to give students a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the practical side of the health and fitness industry. If all areas of the options are taken a candidate will be in a position to be self employed as a life coach, personal trainer, or sporting coach Students will learn how to coach various sports, how to test individuals fitness, design and prescribe gym fitness programmes.

Certification:
- FETAC Level 5 in Sports, Recreation and Exercise.
- FAI Level 1 Coaching Certificate or GAA Level 1 Coaching,
- Sports Coaching certificates in various Sporting and Fitness areas.
Career Opportunities:
The course will give graduates the opportunity to pursue a university course or career in sports science or become sports development officers. The Gaelic Coaching module will be aimed at students becoming development officers in the GAA. The general qualification will lead to careers in the rapidly expanding leisure industry.
The Level 5 qualification can lead to certificate or degree courses in Sports or indeed Business, Computers, etc. in many IT colleges and universities throughout the country, as well as pursuing a FETAClevel 6 in Sports or Leisure Management courses in various colleges of further education. The new Sports and Management Course in IT Blanchardstown will offer graduates a local alternative to pursue their study to honours degree level or students may opt for Sports Science and Health in DCU. We also have progression opportunities through Bangor University and other UK institutions.
Entry Requirements:
- Leaving Cert
- LCVP or LCA.
- Mature Students of all backgrounds.
