Course details

Course requirement: The student/learner must be 18 years of age before the exam date. This new exciting course covers the ITEC syllabus Units 416 and Unit 417. It enables the therapist to gain practical and theoretical skill necessary to work as a Sports Massage Therapist with noninjured/pathological tissue. During the course the student/learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning the practice of Sports Massage Therapy, including Functioning Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Classification of sports injuries and the stages of healing.

Synopsis of Syllabus

  1. History and origins of massage therapy /Holistic approach – its meaning and applications.
  2. Anatomy and Physiology to cover the 4 major and 4 minor systems of the Body
  3. Pathology applicable to the Systems of the body at Level 3
  4. Contraindications to massage (Red flag situations)
  5. Review of the classical techniques of massage, their applications and effects on the body both physiologically and psychologically.
  6. Overview of Specific Sports Massage Techniques and their applications.
  7. Overview of Deep Tissue Massage (DTM) techniques and their application
  8. Overview of Muscle Energy Techniques (ME) and their application.
  9. Review of the principals of training and global year training programmes.
  10. Pre, Post and Inter -competition Massage routines for competitors
  11. A template for prevention and conditioning Massage routines.
  12. A review of acute and post-acute injuries tissue.
  13. An overview of the “Ladders of Rehabilitation suitable for Level 3”
  14. Cryotherapy and Thermotherapy
  15. The effects of stress on the competitor and the role of massage in it’s management
  16. Consultation techniques Ethics, Professionalism, Client Care
  17. Health, Hygiene and Safety
  18. Nutrition as per syllabus Unit 416 ITEC
