This course provides the students with the opportunity to examine in detail the area of sports injuries and their subsequent treatment. It also provides students with knowledge to progress into other specialities in the Sport and Recreation / Sports Development industry.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Biology would be an advantage. Mature applicants welcome. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Applying Sports Massage Methods to Non-pathological Tissue

Provides students with the understanding, skills and techniques to plan, prepare and apply a range of sports massage methods to uninjured clients.

Functional Anatomy, Physiology and Nutrition for Sports Therapies

Provides the student with in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the importance of nutrition for sport participation and rehabilitation

Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme

Enables students to gain practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide nutritional advice for active leisure, recreation and physical activity

Body Massage & Figure Analysis

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work autonomously and independently in carrying out figure analysis and body treatments.

Sports Anatomy & Physiology

This subject equips the learner with the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and how it is relevant to participation in sports and exercise.

Sport and Exercise Injury Prevention

This module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge and practical skills to identify, treat and rehabilitate athletes with different sporting injuries.

Kinesiology

To equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to develop kinesthetic awareness, using ideo-kinesis and applying principles of correct body posture and alignment to enable the learner to understand the connection between correct alignment and efficient movement performance.

Exercise and Fitness

This practical unit is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of safe and appropriate exercise and fitness programmes.

Sport and Recreation Studies

To equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the theory and practice underpinning sport and recreation activities to enable the learner to work under supervision in a variety of sport, recreation and exercise contacts.

Communications

This subject facilitates learners to acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development.

Work Experience

Involves learners preparing and planning for work, working under direction in a specific vocational area and reviewing and evaluating that work.

Occupational First Aid

Provides the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and competence to provide and coordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these Regulations.
