Course details
Sports massage is the use of massage for the treatment and prevention of sports injuries. It can be used as part of a training programme to help prevent injury; as part of a rehabilitation programme to treat injury; as part of a warm-up for an event and as part of the wind-down after the event. It helps improve the suppleness and flexibility of muscles and joints, improves lymph and blood circulation and assists the body systems in functioning at their optimum level.
In this course you will learn how to use different massage techniques before, during and after athletic events to help relieve muscle ache and soreness so as to ensure faster recovery and injury prevention.
COURSE OUTLINE
- Benefits and Effects of Sports Massage
- Sports Massage Techniques. Cover: advanced classical Swedish massage movements, compression, frictioning and connective tissue massage, stretching
- Pre-event sports massage - what is it? which techniques are used?
- Post-event sports massage - what is it? which technques are used?
- Contraindications & Precautions
- Hands on practicum - practical training on key muscle groups, their origins and insertions
Assessment Method
- Competency-based Formative Assessment
Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
Target Audience
Physical Education teachers, coaches, athletes and anyone who wishes to acquire event sports massage techniques
Participants to take note:
- Participants must be prepared to massage and be massaged by other participants if not attending with partner
- Participants are required to come in sports attire: running shorts and tee-shirts. Nails need to be trimmed and hair tied back (if long)
