At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- understand the changes in older adults and the degenerative changes in ageing
- have the requisite knowledge and relevant practical skills to provide support in activities of daily living for the elderly
COURSE OUTLINE
Changes in older adults
- Degenerative changes in ageing
- Emotional/Mental
- Physical –vision, hearing, taste, skin
- Heart, lungs, bladder , bowel, Bones.
Prevention of Falls – who falls, why do they fall
- Prevention of falls ,education, offering assistance, constant surveillance
- Environmental safety
Prevention of infections - standary procedures in Hand hygiene , hand wash , hand rub , use of PPE, contact precaution
Taking and recording of vital signs
- Temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure
- Normal and abnormal readings
- Perform blood glucose test
Nutrition in the elderly – preparing , serving meals .
- Oral feeding , naso-gastric tube feeding
- Hydration
Personal hygiene, showering, grooming, dressing and undressing a handicap person
- Care of the skin, hair, nails, oral hygiene, denture care
Waste Management - Care of the bowel
- Prevention and management of constipation in the elderly
- Insertion of laxative suppositories , giving simple enema
Waste Management - Care of bladder-- incontinence – genitor urinary care
Movement and transfer - Care of bed or wheel chair bound patient
- Use of mobility aides
- Assist in prescribed exercises
- Prevention of pressure ulcers
- Perform simple wound dressings
Assist with administration of medication
- Organisation and storage of medication
- Education on medication types, regime
- Medication preparation
- Medication compliance
Advancement
Upon successful completion, learners can consider our Healthcare Assistant course to provide the necessary competency skills to care for the elderly.
Voluntary Attachments to nursing homes and VWOs will be arranged upon completion of the program.
