Course details

This course has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to progress in education while pursuing a career in soccer and the leisure industry. Suitable candidates will get the opportunity to gain the necessary coaching qualifications to seek work in Ireland and abroad.

Strength and conditioning components along with technical skill will be monitored closely as students’ progress throughout the course. The syllabus will cover a broad range of theoretical and practical modules designed for the students to advance into higher education.

All sports students will have access to our new state of the art gym, which is fully equipped with Techno gym CV machines, machine weights and free weights. Soccer Ed. students will use the gym on a regular basis as part of their conditioning programme. CSN facilities also include a full size 3G Astro Turf pitch and a professional quality grass soccer pitch. CSN students will compete in the various Colleges and Universities cups and leagues throughout the year.

As soccer coaching is a component of this course, students will be encouraged to source a coaching position for their work placement. FAI Kickstart 1 and Kickstart 2 coaching courses will also be part of the course content. Also included are 7V7, 4V4 small side games, Strength and Conditioning.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A current medical clearance certificate from a registered doctor must be presented at the interview.

  • Applicants must have a Leaving Certificate (five passes in ordinary papers) which should include Maths and English.
  • Mature applicants (over 21 years) without the Leaving Certificate entry requirements will be considered on the basis of experience and overall coaching/technical ability. Places are limited and will be allocated on the basis of suitability.
  • All candidates will be interviewed.

THE SELECTION PROCESS WILL CONSIST OF 4 ELEMENTS:

  • An interview.
  • A soccer skills practical.
  • The provision of medical clearance from a doctor. (At interview).
  • The provision of a letter of recommendation from a recognised club. (At interview).

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Soccer Coaching Level 6

Students will learn the skills of soccer coaching.

Sport and Recreation Studies

This provides students with an overview and understanding of the sport, leisure and recreation industry.

Exercise and Fitness

This subject is designed to provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of safe and appropriate exercise and fitness programmes.

Sports Anatomy and Physiology

This subject area provides the learner with an understanding of the working of the human body in sporting contexts.

Kinesiology

The subject aims to provide the learner with a solid working knowledge of anatomy. It also introduces the principles of kinetic motion momentum and gravitational force in relation to their impact on movement as a musculo-skeletal event.

Conditioning

Resistance training, interval training, fitness testing, plyometrics, speed training and general fitness preparation.

Occupational First Aid

Students will be trained to work as first aiders in the workplace.

Word Processing

This subject is designed to enable learners to develop their word processing skills.It assists understanding and application of word processing software and file management techniques.

Communications

Communication skills are highly valued in the workplace.This subject recognises that the acquisition of these skills is a life-long process, and central to personal, social and professional development.

Work Experience

This subject provides the student with practical experience in a work environment.
