    Course details

    This is a part-time (Monday evening, September to May) preparation course for undertaking the American Society of Quality (ASQ) Green Belt Exam in May 2016 which will be held in GMIT. Successfull students will obtain both ASQ Green Belt Certification by passing the ASQ Green Belt Exam and 20 Credits at Level 7 if they pass the GMIT assessment.     Six Sigma Quality

    • Describe the Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control steps in Six Sigma
    • Use 'Define' phase tools to specify the process improvement of a Six Sigma project
    • Determine the current performance using a variety of 'Measure' tools
    • Use the 'Analyse' tools determine the issues to be addressed
    • Use the 'Improve' tools to optimize the process
    • 'Control' the process to ensure variances are corrected

    • Describe the role of Six Sigma in support of Organisational goals.
    • Describe Lean principles and theis application in an organisation
    • Perform a DFMEA and PFMEA analysis
    • Explain the importance of Design for Six Sigma to the organisation.
    • Six Sigma define:Apply Process management tools and Analyse process and custorme elements (including QFD)
    • Apply Project management and Planning tools.
    • Six Sigma measure: Analyse process performance and conduct an FMEA analysis.
    • Apply tools to enhance Team Dynamics.
    • Perform process Input/Output analysis.
    • Apply probablitity and statistical rules and concepts.

    • Six Sigma and the Organization
    • Six sigma and organizational goals: Value of six sigma, organizational drivers and metrics, organizational goals and six sigma projects.
    • Lean principles in the organization: lean concepts and tools, value-added and non-value-added activities, theory of constraints.
    • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) in the organization: Quality function deployment (QFD), design and process failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA & PFMEA), road maps for DFSS

    Six Sigma – Define

    • Process management for projects: Process elements, owners and stakeholders, identify customers, collect customer data, analyse customer data and translate customer requirements.
    • Project management basics: project charter and problem statement, project scope, project metrics, project planning tools, project documentation, project risk analysis, project closure management and planning tools.
    • Business results for projects: Process performance, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), Team dynamics and performance.
    • Team stages and dynamics, six sigma and other team roles and responsibilities, team tools, communication.

    Six Sigma – Measure

    • Process analysis and documentation: process modelling , process inputs and outputs.
    • Probability and statistics: Drawing valid statistical conclusions, central limit theorem and sampling distribution of the mean, basic probability concepts, probability distributions.
    • Collecting and summarizing data: Types of data and measurement scales, data collection methods, techniques for assuring data accuracy and integrity, descriptive statistics, graphical methods. Measurement system analysis.
    • Process capability and performance: process capability studies, process performance versus specification, process capability indices, process performance indices, short-term vs. long-term capability, process capability for attributes data.

    Six Sigma – Analyse

    • Exploratory data analysis: Multi-variable studies, Simple linear correlation and regression.
    • Hypothesis testing : Basics, tests for means, variances, and proportions, paired-comparison tests , Single-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) , Chi square.
    • Six Sigma – Improve & Control
    • Design of experiments (DOE): Basic terms, main effects.
    • Statistical process control (SPC): Objectives and benefits, rational subgrouping, selection and application of control charts. Analysis of control charts, Implement and validate solutions, Control plan

    Entry Requirement

    It is highly recommended that you have a third-level qualification which includes maths or statistics. However there are no formal entry requirements to undertake these modules and you should satisfy yourself as to your suitability to undertake them. If you are planning to undertake this course so as to gain the Bachelor of Science in Lean Sigma Operations you need to have the required Higher Certificate (NFQ Level 6) entry qualification for that award.

    The Mayo Campus is located next to Mayo General Hospital, less than ten minutes walk from Castlebar Town.

    It opened its doors to students in 1994, in the west wing of the Hospital.  The entire building has been sensitively restored to retain as much as possible of the original architecture, while providing the modern facilities and services required for students and staff.
