China's Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, known as HSK or the Chinese Proficiency Test is a standardized test at the state level designed and developed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers (foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities). HSK consists of the basic Chinese proficiency test (HSK Basic), the elementary and intermediate Chinese proficiency test (HSK Elementary-Intermediate) and the advanced Chinese proficiency test (HSK Advanced). HSK is held regularly in China and other countries each year. Certificates of HSK will be issued to those who have secured the required scores.
The exam is suitable for persons wanting to enroll in PRC educational institutions, work in PRC, assess their own level of Mandarin proficiency, or prepare to live in Mandarin-speaking environments.
The course is specially designed to prepare students for this examination so that they are equipped with the skills to tackle the examination questions. Students are also able to move from the basic to intermediate and then on to the advance categories in HSK. At the end of the course, students will be expected to be able to listen and communicate fluently in Mandarin, read and write around 3000 Chinese characters and Chinese texts of relatively long length and have the confidence to sit for the HSK Examinations
Course Outline
- Introduction of Chinese Characters
- Listen, speak, read and write Mandarin in the correct grammatical rules and proper sentence structures
- Essay writing
- Exposure to the exam format and other necessary preparations for the HSK Examinations
Course Certification
Students can receive a certificate by SCI upon completion of the course. Whether or not to take an examination at the end of the course is optional.

Functions of HSK Certificates
- To certify that the holder has acquired the required Chinese Proficiency to enter a school or university as an undergraduate or graduate student.
- To certify that the holder can be exempt from taking the Chinese language course depending on the level of certification.
- As a basis for the employers to evaluate the Chinese proficiency of the job applicants.
About HSK Basic
HSK Basic is a standardized test designed for beginners. It is most appropriate for those who have acquired 400 - 3000 basic Chinese words (referring to level A and B in the Outline of HSK Vocabulary) and the corresponding rules of grammar (referring to level A and B In the Outline of HSK Grammar).
About HSK Elementary-Intermediate
HSK Elementary - Intermediate is suitable for any person who has mastery of 2000 - 5000 Chinese words (referring to level A, B and C in the Outline of HSK Vocabulary) and certain rules of grammar (referring to level A, B and C in the Outline of HSK Grammar).
About HSK Advanced
HSK Advanced applies to those who have mastery of 5000 - 8000 Chinese words (referring to level A, B, C and D in the Outline of HSK Vocabulary) and the corresponding rules of grammar (referring to level A. B. C and D in the Outline of HSK Grammar).
