Certificate of Higher Education in English North East

Course details

The Certificate in Higher Education in English is the equivalent of the first year of the BA English degree and consists of four Level 4 modules which forms the foundation required for progression into the more complex works in the study of Literature. The programme aims to develop a broad range of skills including general communicative competences as well as more technical skills of literary critical analysis through exposure to a variety of literary and non-literary texts from the Middle Ages to the present day.

• You want to expand your knowledge and understanding of the cultural, historical and regional influences in English Literature.
• You want to gain the foundation skills to read, discuss and write about literary and non-literary texts.

What are my career options?

Studying English will equip you with transferable skills that can be used in a wide range of contexts. You will be able to understand and analyse complex ideas and to present your ideas clearly and logically. This will give you a sound basis for a career in areas such as the civil service, teaching and research, advertising and marketing, journalism, radio and television, and commerce and business. If you further your studies and complete the BA successfully you may be able to progress to postgraduate study in the degree field or a related area of the arts and humanities.

Programme Structure

The CertHE consists of 4 courses studied in one year. Upon successful completion, students can progress onto the DipHE in English or 2nd year of the BA English.
