Objectives

The aim of the Diploma programme is to ensure that students gain a working knowledge of the environment of a foundation programme in Fashion Design and Marketing.

Students will gain sufficient knowledge and confidence as the programme guides them through the core values and language of design and marketing with a focus on innovation, creativity and business acumen. Students will be taught to further explore methods and materials, processes and approaches, possibilities and potential within a creative and academic environment. A deliberate feature of the programme is for students to engage in experiential learning through a range of pedagogies that include field trips, industry collaborations and listening to guest speakers. Students may incorporate these findings into their projects.

Through this, the students will understand a variety of approaches and open methodologies needed within the foundation studies, to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to create a portfolio of work which will help them progress further to the BA Honours programmes.

Methods of Assessment

The programme is offered in full-time study mode only. Students must complete and pass each module to be eligible for the Diploma in Fashion Design and Marketing award. The programme is taught and assessed in English.

Hypothesis of Fashion

This module is intended to form the basis of students’ knowledge and understanding of contemporary and historical art, culture, design and visual communication. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of key movements within a historical context, providing a framework for their understanding of art, culture and design. Students will also develop research and skills in identifying, selecting and recording appropriate references for study.

Business of Fashion

This module will equip students with the knowledge and understanding of basic business principles and techniques, how these apply to fashion products and services and why market solutions for stylistic fashion trends are required both in a national and global context in today’s complex and perse world. Students will research and develop an innovative strategic business plan with relevant fashion solutions for a specified market, using methods explored within this module.

Design Principles

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of the key principles of design and to produce effective design solutions, while addressing the underlying questions of purpose, intended audience and their needs and cost. Students should begin to gain an understanding in their developmental work and in the production of finished work. Students will evaluate the different qualities and properties associated with different media and use appropriate techniques and materials.

Design Conceptualisation

This module aims to develop the breadth and depth of a student’s visual communication knowledge, skills and understanding. Students will study the use of visual imagery effectively to communicate ideas, messages and meaning and apply this research to their own ideas, investigation and exploration of the visual communication techniques. Students will also develop an understanding of the importance of using the appropriate methods to achieve creative intentions.
