- Duration: 1 Day
Course details
To ensure the safe use of ionizing radiation for employees engaged in performing diagnostic industrial radiography using gamma-ray projectors and/or X-ray machines. This course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of radiation, to handle radioactive materials and/or irradiating apparatus safely at work.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Course participants will acquire knowledge to exercise safe handling of radioactive materials and/or irradiating apparatus when they perform radiation work.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Radioactivity, properties of gamma and other particulate emissions
- Quantities and units: radioactivity, half-life, dose and dose rate, energy
- Production of x-rays: atomic and bremsstrahlung
- Interaction of radiation with matter, ionization, Compton Scattering.
- Biological effects of radiation
- Shielding calculations, calculate dose from dose-rate, inverse square law
- Radiation instruments for detection and measurement – personal dosimeter, survey meters, area monitors
- Practical aspects of NDT Radiography – types of gamma and x-radiography equipment, walled enclosures, site radiography.
- Dose limits, personal monitoring, responsibilities of the licensee
- Labeling of radiation areas and radiation sources, storage of radioactive sources, source movement records, transportation of sources, safety and security of sources.
- Accidents. Possible accident scenarios, SOP, Emergency Procedures. Contingency plans, Accident reporting
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Industrial Radiographers who are using, and transporting radioactive sources, gamma-ray projectors or x-ray machines for the purpose of performing industrial radiography.
EXAMINATION
Arrangement will be made for participants to take a test after course completion.
