Course details
This course aims to equip students with a broad based understanding of business, with a focus on logistics and supply chain management, as well as develop technical competency in the cargo area. To help students apply the knowledge learnt in the classroom effectively, students are also required to complete a research project or an industry attachment. The aim is to produce a graduate with the knowledge and skill to pursue a challenging career in the logistics industry.

This course is for anyone who is interested to pursue a career or upgrade his/her capabilities in logistics and supply chain management, including working professionals looking for a mid-career change.
Course Structure / Content
The course consists of 6 academic modules, 3 IATA technical modules and an industrial attachment or research project as follows (refer to Annex A for module synopsis) :

IATA Cargo Technical Modules :
- Cargo Introductory
- Cargo Advanced Rating and Marketing
- Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR)
Industrial Attachment / Research Project
To enable student to apply what is taught in the course to the real-life working environment or a research project.
Delivery Methods
The academic and technical modules will be taught via face-to-face classroom delivery.
Attendance
90% attendance required for all Full Time students and 75% for Part Time students
Assessment
Student will be assessed based on following examinations:
Academic Modules :
Mandatory exams which are set and marked by Sterling Campus with following weightage :
- Class Participation - 10%
- Group Presentation - 20%
- Group Written Assignment - 20%
- Written Examination - 50%
IATA Cargo Technical Modules :
Assessment for the technical modules will be similar in structure to the exams which are set and marked by IATA
Note: For the technical modules, participants are prepared for both the Sterling Campus examinations as well as the IATA examinations. Should they pass the IATA examinations and meet IATA’s requirements, they can additionally obtain IATA’s Diploma in Air Cargo – Distance Learning qualification.
Entry Requirements
The applicant is required to meet one of the following minimum entry requirements:
- Higher NITEC awarded by ITE (Any Discipline), G.C.E. ‘O’ Level or its equivalent with a pass in English
- Applicants without the necessary entry requirements but with related working experience can be considered caseto-case basis; exemptions may be given to Diploma holders from local polytechnics and ‘A’ Level students from Pre-University/Colleges
Graduation Requirements
Students who successfully complete the 6 academic modules, 3 technical modules and Industrial Attachment / Inpidual Project will be awarded with the Professional Diploma in Logistics by Sterling Campus.
Academic modules will be marked based on Sterling Campus grading system whereas IATA Cargo Technical modules will be marked based on IATA grading system :
- Passing grade of 80% for DGR and 60% for both Cargo Introductory and Cargo Advanced Rating and Marketing
- A distinction is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 90% or higher
As noted earlier, students who successfully meet IATA’s requirements for the 3 technical modules can additionally obtain IATA’s Diploma in Air Cargo – Distance Learning qualification. Award is subject to full payment of all fees due.
Annex A
Academic Modules
Business Management
It provides the concepts of business management and relationship with external and internal environment. Participants will learn planning and decision making, organizational design, leadership as well as managing innovation and change.
Marketing
It provides an overview of key concepts, theories and application of marketing in organizations. Participants learn the developing of marketing strategies and plan, consumer behavior, market segmentation, product planning and development and integrated marketing communications.
Economics
It provides a basic understanding of the economy and related activities. Participants learn the concept of supply and demand, various market structures, governmental role in economy, unemployment, inflation, exchange rates and balance of payment.
Accounting and Finance
It provides the concepts in business accounting and financial management, including financial statements, cash flow, valuation and capital budgeting, risk and return, capital structure and pidend policy.
Logistics and Supply Chain Management
It provides the fundamental concept of logistics and supply chain management. Participants learn the role of logistics in economy, organization and its impact on customer service and Inventory management. Participants will also learn the implementing of logistics strategies in the international and global environment.
Business Communications
It provides the key skills necessary for participants to communicate in real world situations. Participants learn personal skills, intercultural communication, work effectively in groups and a thorough coverage of presentational speaking.
IATA Cargo Technical Modules :
Dangerous goods Regulations
It provides participants the knowledge to Dangerous Goods Regulations which include Operators & Shipper’s responsibilities, Limitations, Classification, Identification, Packaging Type, UN Specification Packaging, Marking and Labels, Documentations, Handling and Radioactive Materials.
Cargo Introductory
It provides participants the knowledge to understand the Industry Regulations, Air Cargo Agency, World Geography, Use of Guides, Aircraft, Handling facilities, Air Cargo Acceptance, Cargo Booking Procedure, Cargo Automation, Air Cargo Rates and Charges and Air Waybill.
Cargo Advanced Rating and Marketing
It provides participants the knowledge to understand the review of basic cargo rating principles; Currency regulations, Construction rates, Combination of rates and charges, Mixed consignments and Unit Load Devices.
