Ocean Navigation 

  • Understand Mercator projection, charts and symbols;
  •  Calculate positions by DR, EP and ETA using plane sailing and Mercator sailing;
  •  Understand the effect of tides, course made good, leeway and course to steer.
  •  Plot the ship’s position using the various means and position lines;
  •  Understand variation and deviation. Calculate compass error by transit method;
  •  Know the IALA system, the use of Chart 5011, ALLS, ALRS, tide table and atlas;
  •  Understand the basic principle of passage planning including weather routing;
  •  Understand the concept of time, celestial sphere, hour angle, declination, azimuth and altitude;
  •  Know the Nautical Almanac/tables and extract correct data for use;
  •  Calculate the solutions to spherical triangle, compass error, true altitude and intercept;
