Course details
Conducted in Frankfurt , Freiburg, Stuttgart & Munich, Germany
This 5-day TU Braunschweig - BCA Executive Development Programme: Innovations in Sustainable Design and Technology is designed to provide a strategic platform for leading building professionals to exchange ideas in the area of green building design and technology. As cutting-edge technology can push the frontiers of sustainable buildings to the next level, through lecturer and site visits, the programme aims to discuss ideas and concepts which:
Demonstrate the importance of an integrated interdisciplinary approach: using planning and simulation tools, energy efficient technologies and innovative building materials to realise buildings that provide a maximum level of comfort while demanding a minimum level of energy;
Expose participants to the solar cooling and passive house concepts with the use of extremely efficient building envelopes to achieve ultra-low energy building design;
Enable the participants to appreciate and learn from self-sustaining eco-settlements and models which demonstrate concepts of sustainable communities.
KEY LECTURES
INNOVATIVE DESIGN IDEAS AND TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR EFFICIENT AND COMFORTABLE COOLING IN TROPICAL BUILDINGS
The concept of 'transition zones' will be discussed. This design concept reduces overall energy required for air-conditioning while ensuring thermal comfort. New technological solutions that avoid or partially replace electrically driven chillers will be studied.
FACILITY MANAGEMENT FOR GREEN SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
With more and more energy efficient buildings being built, it is necessary to ensure that these buildings are managed sustainably and keep up to its performance. This topic will introduce and discuss the measures for improving building performance etc. with practical examples.
PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ELECTRICITY STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES
This presentation discusses the possible role of photovoltaic in future global energy scenarios and its present achievements in the German 'Energiewende'. Historical data and the likely speed of developments until 2030 are analysed. The necessary components to be developed for PV system integration are presented in some detail.
SOLAR AIR-CONDITIONING OF BUILDINGS
The presentation covers the basic boundaries of building air-conditioning, with focus on the solar driven technologies. Apart from an introduction of the different chiller technologies (closed cycle systems for chilled water production as well as open desiccant systems for direct air-conditioning) and the required driving heat, different types of solar collectors and a variety of worldwide installed solar cooling systems will be presented.
SMART GRID
Starting from the current German energy balance and future energy scenarios, the change of integrating renewable generators will be demonstrated. Smart Grid technologies will be described and how they can help to solve current challenges will be discussed. Further developments like electric heating systems with storages and electric vehicles will also be discussed.
MODELLING AND DESIGN OF DAYLIGHTING AND FACADE TECHNOLOGIES
This lecture will give an introduction to daylighting, glare and shading control, with examples of daylighting concepts at Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems being shared. The challenge of designing and modeling daylighting technologies and shading control strategies will also be covered. A new modeling approach based on bi-directional scattering distribution functions (BSDF) will be introduced.
SMART BUILDINGS IN SMART GRID
This lecture focuses on the future of buildings and their development from an energy consuming building to an energy producing building. The buildings are expected to be an active part of the energy grid in future. They can be used as power stations with the use of photovoltaic, building integrated photovoltaic, mini cogeneration units etc. The aim is to achieve a positive electricity demand balance, where the supply of energy is higher than the demand of the building. Concepts on the storage of electricity with batteries, e-Mobility and increasing the rate of the use of in-house produced energy will be discussed in this topic.
