Course details

The 7-module course is designed for students who have completed at least 9 years of formal education and wishes to further their studies in courses taught and examined in the English language.  The course also equips students with the basic learning and research skills so as to better prepare them for their pursuit in higher education.

The English Language modules will improve students in their English vocabulary and grammar, reading, writing and spoken skills.   Culture studies gives an appreciation of different cultural norms to foster a tolerance, understanding and empathy.  The course also prepares students in their further education through modules like Learning Skills, Critical Thinking Skills and Foundation Mathematics. In order to graduate successfully, students must pass all 7 modules. Upon successful completion of all 7 modules, students will receive the Certificate in Foundation Studies awarded by SHRM.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The 7 modules are conducted over 3 terms in 9 months. Each term consists of 10 study weeks and 3 break weeks.

MODE OF DELIVERY

The course is fully conducted on a face-to-face basis. Students will attend lectures and tutorial classes. Class size for English Language Level I and English Language Level II are generally kept to a maximum of 15 students for lecture classes. Other modules are kept to a maximum of 40 students per class.

AWARD OF QULIFICATION

Upon passing all the modules, students will be awarded the Certificate in Foundation Studies

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed with a mixture of continuous assessments throughout each term in the form of case studies, discussions, presentations or group and inpidual assignments.

In the event a student fails a module, the student will be given a chance to take a supplementary paper. Failing a supplementary paper will result in the student having to retake the module again.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

  • GCE “N” Level.
  • At least 9 years of formal education and at least 17 years old by 31 December in the year of enrolment.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIRMENT

  • Pass in English at GCE ‘N’ Levels
  • or IELTS score of 5.0
  • or an equivalent English Language qualification
