    This course equips students with knowledge as well as safe, competent and marketable skills in providing effective services to the dental team, through high quality levels of experiential training and instruction. Students will also be prepared to offer responsible patient care.

    The course adds value to their dental surgery assisting profession and provides the opportunity for dental surgery assistants to pursue continuous education and training. Successful graduates of the course will enhance their employability opportunity with local and international dental organizations.

    MODULE OUTLINE

    Dental English

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to be familiarized with the directional terms used in the world of dentistry, understand the role as a Dental Surgery Assistant in using the appropriate terminology with basic knowledge of teeth anatomy, numbering system etc. , gain knowledge and proficiency in all procedures necessary for office management, government and quality mark organizations.

    Patient Management

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to be able to demonstrate the functional and operational aspects of handling patients during the process of Pre-Treatment, in the Treatment Room, Post-Treatment, and other important aspects involving the handling of complaints.

    Service Quality

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to establish customers' needs and provide the appropriate service. This include customer service training for general and supervisory, handling of difficult customers, telephone skills training and personal grooming.

    Basic Sciences

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to demonstrate the study of the anatomy of the head and neck with emphasis on the maxilla and mandible. It provides the student an opportunity to use anatomical models and teeth to apply didactic information. In addition, the students will have exposure to the responsibilities in the area of Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Diet and Nutrition.

    Dental Assisting (General)

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to apply infection control and sterilization of instruments at the clinic, learn the correct methods in handling sharps and biohazards. Students will work with the Dental Surgeon and learn about close support dentistry. They will be taught instruments, equipment, chair and clinic maintenance. The use of anesthesia will be introduced, together with dental materials and technology. The aims, objectives and common uses of dental radiography will also be taught.

    Dental Assisting (Topical)

    The syllabus coverage allows the students to be introduced to the basic theories and procedures involved in various Dental Specialties including Restorative/Cosmetic Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, and Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics. Students will learn the philosophy and principles of preventive dentistry. Emphasis is on the dental assistant's role in patient's education and care.

    Clinical Practical Training

    The coverage of the Clinical Practical training allows the students to get an understanding of the nature of the Dental Industry in a Practical and Operational aspect. Students are expected to get a thorough practical training on dental materials, laboratory procedures, procedures during chair-side assisting and emergency care management etc. for a period of 3 months. Practical training provides students with operational experience in the Dental Industry.

    ENTRY & GRADUATION REQUIREMENT FOR THE PROGRAM

    The pre-requisites for Certificate in Dental Surgery Assisting

    • 16 years old and above; and
    • GCE "N" level with a pass in English or equivalent; or
    • For International Students, they must complete Secondary or High School education or equivalent with a pass in English.

    Other qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    Graduation requirement for Certificate in Dental Surgery Assisting

    In order to be conferred the course award, the student must achieve a pass for STEi Examination, and at least 75% of class attendance. International Students holding Student Pass are required to maintain an attendance of 90% and above.
