Course details

This foundation course provides a basic and systematic approach to traditional Chinese ink painting techniques. It introduces students to the use and care of basic ink painting materials. Studio practice includes basic brush strokes in the xieyi or spontaneous style, the outline or meticulous style and the integrated style of painting.

Terms and conditions

Students will be presented a Certificate upon successful completion of all 4 short courses and passing all required assessment.

COURSE MODULES

Chinese Painting 1 - Traditional

This course is an introduction to basic ink painting materials and the basic brush strokes of Chinese Ink Painting. The painting of Plum Blossom, Chinese Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum will be studied in the xieyi or spontaneous style. There will also be exploration of techniques of lines, dots and ink tone variations.

Chinese Painting 2 - Flowers

This course includes the study and painting of flowers of the four seasons in both the outline and spontaneous style. Attention to use of colour and correct brush loading will part of the painting practice.

Chinese Painting 3 - Flowers and Birds

This course includes the painting of flowers and birds as well as swimming fowls. Attention will be paid to form and structure in the study of flowers and birds. Brush techniques include the lift, pressure and pause movements of the brush.

Chinese Painting 4 - Fruits and Vegetables 

This course includes the study of fruits and vegetables with attention to good composition and the use of Chinese ink and colour, using both the wet and dry brush techniques.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be 17 years old & above.

Prerequisites for registration of short courses

  • For Chinese Painting 2, applicants need to complete Chinese Painting 1 (within a year)
  • For Chinese Painting 3, applicants need to complete Chinese Painting 1 & 2 (within a year)
  • For Chinese Painting 4, applicants need to complete Chinese Painting 1, 2 & 3 (within a year)
