Course details

This course aims to provide people currently working in or wishing to enter the manufacturing industry with the skills and knowledge required to perform their jobs effectively.

This course is developed to enable an individual to acquire the skills and knowledge in using hand tools in manufacturing at work. It is a systematic approach that workers can use to make incremental and breakthrough improvements in processes that produce products and services for customers.

This course is specially developed by Singapore Workforce Development Agency to facilitate approved organizations under the WSQ scheme in training and preparing their staff to achieve the Statement of Attainment (SOA) for the competency unit “Use Hand Tools.”

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the training programme, the participant will be able to:

  1. Prepare for work activities
  2. Use hand tools to produce work to specifications
  3. Correctly handle faulty and/or unsafe hand tools
  4. Perform routine maintenance checks of hand tools

COURSE OUTLINE

1. Prepare for work activities

  • Organisational procedures related to Workplace Safety and Health (WSH)
  • Types and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Types of hand tools, their usage and maintenance
  • Common manufacturing hazards and risk mitigation

2. Use hand tools to produce work to specifications

  • Organisational procedures related to reading and interpreting job order
  • Interpret job requirements from job order in compliance with procedures
  • Determine appropriate hand tools to be used according to procedures
  • Use selected hand tools correctly to produce work piece to required specifications
  • Use hand tools according to organisational and legislative OHS requirements

3. Correctly handle faulty and/or unsafe hand tools

  • Common faults and defects in hand tools
  • Organisational procedures for reporting hand tools defects
  • Correctly handle faulty and/or unsafe hand tools

4. Perform routine maintenance checks of hand tools

  • Organisational Preventive Maintenance (PM) procedures
  • Identify hand tools requiring routine maintenance based on Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedule
  • Carry out basic routine check according to organisational procedures
  • Adhere to maintenance schedule for hand tools
  • Summarise feedback to trainees on skills performance on all competency elements
  • Conduct assessment briefing
