Course details

The Diploma in Information Technology programme focuses on the practical and theoretical dimensions of IT and provides a solid foundation for students who may want to pursue a Bachelor degree programme in related fields such as:

• Information Technology;
• Computer Security; and
• Information Services.

Structure & Content

To qualify for the award of Diploma in Information Technology, students are required to complete eight (8) units of study as follows: 

• Communicating in an IT Environment
• Computer Fundamentals
• Programming Principles
• Systems Analysis
• Applied Communications
• Computer Security
• Operating Systems
• Systems and Database Design

Assessment Methods

Each module is assessed by a combination of class participation, written assignments (inpidual and/or group assignments), project or examinations. Assessment modes may differ according to inpidual module requirements.

Students will attend a combination of face-to-face lectures and tutorials in this programme.

Entry Requirements

Applicant should possess one (1) of the following:

• GCE 'A' Level with a minimum grade of 6 points for three (3) 'H2' subjects, OR
• GCE 'A' Level with passes (E) in two (2) academic subjects, OR
• ITE Higher Nitec, OR
• High School Qualification equivalent to Year Twelve (12) in the case of international students, OR
• SMF Institute Certificate in Foundation Studies
• Matured candidates of age 21 and above with substantial working experience would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicant must also demonstrate proficiency in the English Language (EL1) or its equivalent:

• GCE 'O' Level English Language C6 & above; OR
• Completion of senior secondary/tertiary studies in English; OR
• Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) minimum grade C; OR
• Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) minimum grade B; OR
• IELTS minimum band score of 5.5 - (Reading and Listening 5.5) and (Writing and Speaking 5.0); OR
• TOEFL score of at least 525 points (paper-based) or 200 points (computer-based)
• Pass SMF Institute English Placement Test
