Course details

The Certificate for Higher Education is a pre-degree or pre-diploma preparatory program designed primarily for students who wish to pursue higher education studies delivered in the English language. It is particularly appropriate for students who wish to study vocational subjects such as Business or Tourism.

Learning Outcomes

  • Ability to display the range of study, research and writing skills needed for effective study at the higher education level.
  • A level of English Language equivalent to IELTS 5.5
  • Understand the scope and method of study of at least one subject area at Higher Education level.
  • On completion of the course students will be awarded a Shelton Certifi cate for Higher Education and can proceed to study for a Shelton Diploma.

Modules

Effective Study Skills

The module aims to provide students with the fundamental learning skills necessary to derive maximum benefit from their Higher Education studies. As such, it will also increase the students’ independent learning abilities and good study habits. This module will help students to know and prepare for what to expect in Higher Education. It will include knowing oneself as learner, independent study, good study habits, study skills components and strategies, effective reading and learning approaches, motivational learning, time management, listening and note taking, computer skills, research and writing creative assignments, taking tests and examinations, questioning and cognitive procedures.

Advanced Academic English

This module provides students with the fundamental skills to use and understand appropriate grammar, punctuation and vocabulary at the Diploma level. The module will help students develop tools and strategies to improve their competency in written, spoken, aural and reading comprehension skills. Students will also gain insight into how to use dictionaries efficiently and effectively to increase their understanding and improve their own vocabulary and grammar usage. The course will allow students to apply an appropriate level of English in a variety of academic situations so they are prepared to do this at the next level of study.

Academic Writing Skills

This module provides students with the fundamental skills of writing for their academic work. It will help students to formulate their ideas and thoughts into writing. Students will develop the ability to write creatively, format their work for different platforms and learn how to plan and structure their writing. The course will help students to connect ideas with writing and increase students’ ability to perform independently.

Academic Research Skills

The module aims to provide students with the basic research skills needed for higher education study. These include how to find and select the most relevant information from source materials; understanding the concepts of qualitative and quantitative research; learning what plagiarism is and how to avoid it and learning how to do reference and use the Harvard referencing style. 

It will also help students to use their own ideas and express opinions based on the knowledge obtained from research.

Communication Skills

This module aims to equip students with the communication skills necessary to gain maximum benefit from their higher education studies and to operate effectively as employees and managers in an organization.

Quantitative Methods 

This module aims to ensure that all students have sufficient basic numeracy skills to operate effectively in a higher education or typical working environment. 

Business Studies 

This module aims to introduce the nature and purpose of business and the various forms of business enterprise and trade activities and to introduce students to the main functional areas of business and to develop an awareness of what is involved in studying business at the higher education level.

Principles of Accounts (Elective)

This module is designed to provide students with an introduction to accounting and in particular it aims to introduce the basic principles of financial accounting and their application, to acquire knowledge and techniques that will assist students in the performance of financial accountancy functions in industry and commerce and to enable students to interpret and report upon the information obtained from the use of Financial Statements.

Introduction To Travel Tourism & Hospitality (Elective)

This module aims to introduce students to the basic principles and concepts of tourism as an academic discipline, to give students an appreciation of the history, dimensions, growth, impact and importance of tourism in the economic development of certain regions, to acquaint students with the various organisations and their role in developing and promoting tourism, to develop an understanding of the various components of international and domestic travel and to identify the current trends and issues related to tourism. 

Assessments

A variety of assessment methods is used, including examinations, assignments and presentations, This is to prepare students for the variety of assessments methods that they are likely to encounter in their further studies. Assessments are held at the end of each module and resit assessments are conducted after the assessment and award board meetings which are held three times each year.
