Course details
Accounting & Finance is specially designed to inculcate students with the concepts and tools for more effective responsibilities in the fi eld. The course helps students perform analytical studies and develop logical arguments to support the business decision making process.
Learning Outcomes
- Sound theoretical knowledge of the various functional elements related to finance and accounting;
- A high level of communication and interpersonal skill;
- The ability to identify and analyse business problems, collect relevant data so that plans and policies can be formulated and implemented;
- Practical guidelines to manage and administer their areas of responsibilities effi ciently and effectively.
- On completion of the Advanced Diploma course students will be awarded a Shelton Advanced Diploma in Accounting & Finance and can proceed to pursue to do their degree in Accounting & Finance.
Aims
The Advanced Diploma in Finance and Accounting programme allows students to acquire the critical Finance and Accounting knowledge. The program is specially designed to inculcate students the concepts and tools for more effective responsibilities in the field. The course offers an interactive medium for inpiduals to learn critical thinking, perform analytical studies, as well as to develop logical arguments to support the business decision-making process.
Module Synopses
Advanced Financial Accounting
This module is designed to build on the basic understanding of accounting principles and concepts covered in diploma level. Students will be provided with knowledge of the current international accounting standards and harness on their ability to demonstrate a range of financial accounting techniques
Management Accounting Techniques
This module is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the preparation and processes involved in cost and management accounting which are needed by management in its planning and decision making responsibilities.
Taxation
This module is designed to develop knowledge and skills relating to the Singapore tax system as applicable to inpiduals and companies
Financial Reports
This module is designed to develop the basic techniques in preparing financial statements and develop knowledge and understanding of more advanced financial accounting concepts and principles. Students will be required to apply the understanding by preparing and interpreting financial reports in a practical context.
Audit
This module is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of the audit process and its application in the context of the external regulatory framework and for business control and development.
General Options (choose 1 of 3):
Human Resource Management
This module provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of Human Resource Management. It aims at providing an understanding of the personnel function of management through the consideration of systems and frameworks, which create and sustain the employment relationship within the organisation
Information Management
This unit enables students to recognize the need for managers to be able to gather, analyze, record, store and disseminate information as part of the management function. The focus of the unit is not on information systems but on the processes. The unit develops the skills and techniques involved in managing information, and students will learn to manage information to inform decision-making.
Fundamentals of Marketing
This module aims to investigate the principles that underpin the marketing process and how they apply in business. It is a broad-based unit providing a general overview of marketing for all students and a foundation for further study in the specialist area of marketing.
Assessments
The modules are assessed by either by a written examination or written examination and assignment for a maximum score of 100%. The examinations are held at the end of each module and re-sit examinations are conducted after the assessment and award board meetings which are held 3 times each year.
