Course details

Filming is the art of drawing using light” This quote suggests the importance of light in filming. Light is not only used to enlighten objects but it also involves the aesthetic and visual composition in order to create a visual piece of art full of dramatic and expressive power. However, to do so, one must learn several artistic tools in addition to the technical knowledge of equipment such us types of lights and their characteristics and effects. This course is designed to deal with the fundamental rules and concepts of internal and external lighting.

Course Objectives :

At the end of the course, participants should: 

• Understand the concept and methods of internal and external lighting 
• Lighting the location in presence of a single camera and multiple cameras 
• Respecting the filming restrictions without neglecting the lighting 
• Perceiving the dramatic, aesthetic and psychological dimensions of lighting

Course Outline :

• Lighting properties 
• Artificial and natural light sources and the difference between them 
• Types of lighting and their equipment 
• Basic types of filters and controlling of color temperature 
• Reflectors and monitoring the light sources • Using lighting as a source of information 
• The space: ( description of shedding light on the space) 
• The time properties (timing, seasons, weather) 
• The atmosphere (color temperature and the concept of hot and cold) 
• Aesthetics: lighting and the artistic composition of the picture 
• The dramatic and artistic effect of lighting • Building the lighting: 
• The direct and the indirect lighting 
• Availing of the location’s properties whilst filming 
• Silhouette 
• Determining the shooting locations and creating lighting balance 
• The concepts of key light, diffuse and backlight 
• The relationship between lighting, decoration and background 
• The internal and external lighting 
• Security precautions
