Arabic is the mother tongue of approximately 240 million people and a second language for around 60 million people globally. It is the official language of twenty five countries in the Arabian Peninsula, in the states of the Levant and in various countries of North Africa. In addition, Arabic is used as a liturgical language by 1.5billion Muslims around the world in such locations as Turkey, Malaysia and even the United Kingdom.

Originally Arabic was primarily a spoken language. Pre-Islamic Arabia is known as Al-Jahiliya (ignorance) and the majority of people were unable to read and write. This era is famed for its poets such as Imra Ul Qais and Antara Ibn Shdadad who read their poems at annual poetry festival in Ukaz, a market town near Mecca.

With the spread of Islam around six centuries ago by Mohammed, the revered prophet of Islam, Arabic developed into a written language and was taught as a vital skill throughout the Arabian peninsula. The Quran, the holy text of Islam, was revealed in Arabic. It is the first documented Arabic script and in addition to poetry became the most important source for the written and spoken language.

The development of regional Arabic dialects began in the thirteenth century and continued into the eighteenth century. Classical Arabic retained its role as a literary language to the current day.

Arabic dialects are divided into 4 groups:

  • North Africa (excluding Egypt).
  • Egypt and Sudan.
  • Lebanon, Jordon, Palestine and Syria.
  • Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula

The Ascent teaching method provides immediate contact meantime elements, a necessity for classical grammar or reading and writing the Arabic language, and allows the student a new freedom to learn where, when and how he pleases.

An evaluation test will be administered before starting to help the participant join a suitable level. Coverage of course includes speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.
