Course Aims

  • Safety and Health at Work is a mandatory module for the Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support.
  • This module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in the care provision working environment.

Course Outline

  • Recognise the factors that influence health, safety and welfare.
  • Apply the principles and procedures of health and safety.
  • Understand the importance of hazard identification and risk assessment
  • promote safe working practices and procedures.
  • explain risk factors in relation to health, to include stress, lifestyle, diet, illness & infection and outline procedures in relation to infection control
  • Be familiar with core legislation of safety, health and welfare.

Course Work

  • Assignments (2) (60%): Candidates will examine two aspects of safety and/or health in the care setting. They will plan, investigate and evaluate the topic. Evidence may take the form of small scale surveys, practical experiments or other investigations.
  • Theory Based Examination (40%)

Entry Requirements

  • FETAC Level 4, Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Recognised qualifications of approved overseas institutions
  • Mature students with relevant work or life experience
  • English language proficiency if appropriate.
