Course details
The two-day Four Wheel Drive course is designed to take the principles learnt in the Light Vehicle Defensive Driving course and promote the goal of Crash-Free Driving to drivers of vehicles in an off-road environment where the particular hazards in that environment are assessed and controlled. This course assists participants in identifying the limitations of a 4WD vehicle and helps them gain confidence in vehicle operation through a "hands-on" approach: drivers learn by practical demonstration, explanation and practice sessions and then undergo a comprehensive off-road driving assessment to ensure that they have the appropriate skills to reduce the risk exposure.

- Introduction to and familiarisation with safe 4WD operations
- Pre-trip inspection and basic vehicle maintenance
- Vehicle preparation and journey management planning
- Safety, navigation and recovery equipment
- Gear selection and driving technique
- Vehicle recovery techniques
- Practical off-road driving
Objectives
To assist the participant in identifying the limitations and capabilities of a 4WD vehicle, and help them to gain confidence in the operation of the vehicle in a variety of off-road conditions.
Outcomes
This course will deliver the required driver training in terms of theory and practical skills. The participant must be competent in both areas to attain the qualification and certification. Theory competence is assessed during the interactive classroom and hands-on practical sessions and supported by a comprehensive practical off-road skill assessment. At the end of this course the participant will be able to:
- Conduct a pre-trip vehicle inspection
- Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle 4WD systems and recovery techniques
- Drive a 4WD vehicle in a confident and competent manner in an off-road environment
A certificate of competence is issued to participants who successfully complete this course.
