    The aim of the programme is to up skill a cohort of people within Waterford County to enhance, maintain and manage a network of identified trails as part of the Waterford Trails Strategy and meet the demands of tourism related enterprises that support that trail network. Start you own business training will equip learners to develop their own trails related business ideas during the programme.

    Programme Objectives:

    On completing this Programme participants will:

    Achieve a Level 5 Major Award in Tourism with Business relating to recreation and amenity trail development. The purpose of this award is to enable the learners to independently and effectively carry out a range of functions in recreational tourism trail development and related tourism enterprises or to progress to further/higher education and training.

    Generate an awareness of the role of community in tourism development including trail development, accommodation provision, interpretation and support services.

    Have a good understanding of heritage, cultural and activity tourism product potential on the trail routes and in the city and county.

    Be able to identify how a trail can be developed, managed and maintained within the standards set under the Waterford Trails Development Strategy and in line with the guidelines of the National Trails Office.

    Have an understanding of traditional skills, landscape design and countryside management necessary to attain a high quality standard of maintained recreation trails.

    The programme consists of the following modules:

    Tourism Principles & Practice; Tourism Information & Administration; Hard Landscape Construction; Safety & Health at Work; Plant Identification, Care & Maintenance; Sport & Recreation, Start Your Own Business, Work Experience, Communications, Word Processing

    In addition to these modules we will deliver two modules specifically aimed at trail development; National Trails Development Standards and Community Trail Development.

    The practical nature of the training will appeal to those interested in developing careers in trail planning, development and construction as well as those interested in developing and working in related tourism businesses such as activity tourism, guiding, accommodation provision, etc. Participants will work on the Anne Valley Trail and experience trails throughout the county as part of the programme. Specific training will be provided in trail planning, development and maintenance, building an understanding of the role and expectations of landowners, community, local authorities and the National Trails office. It is anticipated the participants will finish the programme with a thorough knowledge of the network of trails within County Waterford and an overview of trails nationwide.

    Suide Iol Oidis Duin Aill operating as We_They is a community owned education, training & conference centre in east County Waterford. Guided by the principles of Access, Opportunity and Excellence, the mission of the centre is to provide a hub of learning excellence, to create opportunities for people to succeed and facilitate access to education for all groups. The centre aims to provide equal access to learning where all people have the opportunity to acquire and develop the skills needed to participate in today's knowledge based society.

    We_They provides a community resource for the surrounding area which includes meeting space, services such as community garden, library & events, training facilities, and management of a number of public and heritage areas locally. The centre is targeted at groups including the elderly and people with disabilities, but provides services for all individuals and groups within the community and further afield. These services are funded under the Department of Social Protection, with the centre operating under the Community Services Programme administered by Pobal.
