Course details

This full time course is designed specifically for those who wish to further enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of radio broadcasting and production. The course places great emphasis on self-motivation, time management and group interaction. The course content includes “On Air” presentation skills, Radio Journalism, Research Skills, Documentary practice, Audio Processing and Ethical and Legal Issues. Training will initially take place by producing and presenting radio programmes for the college’s campus radio Juice FM. Further training is available on the college's licensed radio station, in state of the art studios. JUICE FM broadcasts to many parts of Cork City from September to March.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A QQI Level 5-FETAC Level 5 award in a relevant area of study to include Media Analysis and Communications with radio experience. All candidates will be interviewed and required to complete a voice audition.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Media Industry Awareness

This subject is designed to broaden the learner’s understanding of old and new media formats, specifically looking at production and postproduction values, audience theory and the regulation of new media.

Media Ethics & Legal Framework

This subject is intended to enable candidates to have an in depth awareness of the ethical and legal issues concerning the media. The subject is designed to prepare learners for working in the media and in journalist circles where they may already have some working knowledge of ethics and legislation that pertains to the media.

Radio News Broadcasting

This subject is designed to be taken in conjunction with the Radio Techniques subject where course work and assessment may be integrated. The subject is designed to provide learners with a knowledge and understanding of Radio News Broadcasting issues.

Radio Documentary Production

This subject is designed to give the candidate the range of skills required to work in the area of radio documentary production. The mode of tutoring and delivery is intended to encourage the candidate to manage and produce audio work to a high standard in a simulated workplace environment.

Broadcasting Presentation Skills

This subject is designed to give the candidate the range of skills required to present radio and television programmes to a professional standard. The mode of teaching and delivery is intended to encourage the candidate to manage and produce broadcast work to a high standard in a simulated workplace environment.

Radio Techniques

The subject is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the technologies and techniques that underpin modern radio broadcasting. Both practical and theoretical approaches will be used to deliver the subject.

Work Experience

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks autonomously and/or in a supervisory capacity.

Communications

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in a comprehensive range of everyday tasks and in work related tasks independantly and/or in a superisoray capacity
