Course details

This full time course is designed specifically for those who wish to get a comprehensive and practical grounding in the field of radio broadcasting and production. The course places great emphasis on self-motivation, time management and group interaction. The course content includes “On Air” presentation skills, interviewing, news and sports compiling and reading, sound recording, digital editing and commercial recording. Training will initially take place by producing and presenting radio programmes for the college’s campus radio. Further training is available on the college's licensed radio station JUICE FM, in state of the art digital I.P. studios. JUICE FM broadcasts to many parts of Cork City from September to March.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied standard.All candidates will be interviewed and required to complete a voice audition.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Radio Programme Production

  • The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge,
  • skill and competence to produce radio programmes and other radio
  • broadcast materials to a standard suitable for a range of services at local, regional and national level.

Sound Engineering and Production

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a sound engineering and production environment and develop an awareness of present audio technological developments.

Media Analysis

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to identify successful media practices using the theoretical framework that underpins practical media work.

Political Studies

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to engage with key cultural, political, social and economic issues including an awareness of the centrality of politics in everyday life and with an understanding of the range and persity of political systems in Ireland and of the European Union.

Research Skills for Journalism

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, techniques and competence to effectively carry out online and offline research, generate contacts and carry out interviews for both the print and broadcast media.

Word Processing

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce documents in a variety of contexts to a professional or publishable standard whilst working autonomously and under general direction

Communications

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in standard everyday tasks and in work-related tasks, operating independently while under general direction.

Work Experience

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks independently while under general direction.
