HOW WILL I LEARN?

The Cultural and Heritage Studies programme offers students a wonderful blend of exciting subjects along with an excellent range of organised cultural trips and a work experience placement.

Throughout the year, students will participate in a broad range of interesting projects, field trips, cultural visits and guided tours e.g. Dublin Castle, National Museum, Kilmainham Gaol, Newgrange, Titanic (Belfast), St Patrick’s Cathedral, Glasnevin Cemetry, etc.

You will be required to complete assignments throughout the year.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

A full Award is granted on passing the relevant eight components. You will be assessed throughout and at the end of the year. On successful completion of each component, you will be awarded a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction grade.

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE FROM YOU!

The programme is particularly suited to people with a keen interest in subject areas such as history, archaeology and folklore.You may have ambitions to pursue an Arts/Humanities/Law degree. You will be responsible for securing an appropriate off site work placement before the programme commences.

CAREER/PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

This 1-year programme is designed to facilitate students who wish to progress into either:

  1. employment or new start-up business opportunities in the field of Culture and Heritage or
  2. Higher education in the Arts and Humanities fields. Many of our past students are currently studying in:
  • Dublin City University (International Relations)
  • NUI Maynooth (Law, History, English, etc.)
  • St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra (Geography, History, etc.)
  • Mater Dei (secondary teacher training – English, History and Religion)
  • UCD (Archaeology/Arts)
  • NUI Galway (Law)

Participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to gain employment in the area of culture and heritage and more recently, graduates will explore setting up a tourism enterprise. There are an extensive range of Higher Education options available to successful graduates of the Cultural and Heritage programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A student seeking entry to this programme does not need a previous formal qualification. However, the student must demonstrate at interview the capacity to successfully participate on this programme. This includes both the academic and work experience elements of the programme. Should the student have previous qualifications, one of the following may be appropriate for admission to the programme:

  • Leaving Certificate/LCVP/LCA
  • QQI Level 4 Award
  • Mature Students (over 21yrs) who may not have formal academic requirements but who have the ability to successfully participate on  the course will be considered. (RPL Recognition of Prior Learning)
