Course details
The Contributing to Projects courses caters to professionals who support projects, but do not oversee them, and may include:
- Newly appointed or part-time project team members
- Discipline engineers new to the project environment
- Finance personnel
- Business development personnel
- Contracting and procurement personnel who interact with projects and procure equipment and/or services for projects
- Human resources personnel who staff project teams or interact with projects
- IT personnel who support, or are members of, project teams
This course, however, is not recommended for newcomers to the project engineering field. Such inpiduals are advised to enrol on the “Essentials of Project Management” course instead.
What You Will Learn
The purpose of the Contributing to Projects course is to impart the basic terminology, theories, principles, processes and practices necessary for the development and execution of major Capital Investment Projects, thus enabling professionals to effectively support project progression.
Your development requirements should be aligned with one or more of the key learning objectives:
- Project Framing and Governance: Understanding the framing of projects in the general context of a full project life cycle , the required activities and deliverables;understanding the importance of project assurance (audits and reviews) and the roles and responsibilities of technical authorities; grasping the importance of peer assists with regards to project progression across decision gates. Planning and Scheduling: Understanding project planning, scheduling andcritical path analysis; understanding work breakdown structures and budgetdevelopment; grasping the importance of agreement and plan buy-ins; understanding change control and project control applications.
- Risk Management: Identifying and managing risks and opportunities; understanding and implementing risk responses (assessment and mitigating actions); understanding and communicating project uncertainties and grasping the role of uncertainty in decision-making.
- Project Resourcing: Understanding resource needs with regards to required numbers and competencies; understanding team behaviour and alignments; grasping team building concepts to maintain team focus and ensure successful project delivery; understanding the relationship between contracting and procurement and other interfaces among discipline members of the project team.
- Stakeholder Management: Identifying stakeholders and their interests/drivers; managing internal and external stakeholder expectations; understanding theimportance of communication with stakeholders and its impact on project success; understanding how to manage customer expectations.
- Project Team Integration: Understanding team and discipline integration; understanding work stream and resource integration; understanding theimportance of communication across internal and external team members; understanding how the various components of a project fit together; understanding the aspects of quality decision-making.
On completion of this module you should be able to:
- Identify the fundamental elements and best practices of project management
- Recognise how the management of specific components on a project come together to ensure successful project development and execution
- Effectively contribute to the activities of a capital investment project with a comprehensive understanding of how your role complements those of other project team members
