Course details
This course is recommended for all new entrants to the field of project engineering regardless of their job group level, and inclusive of those working in project services departments. This course is also suitable for other engineering professionals who interact closely with projects, including:
- Operations personnel supporting the project environment
- Contracting, financial and /or commercial personnel heavily involved in projects
- Experienced hires new to a company, who require fundamental grounding in project management processes for capital projects
What You Will Learn
This course will introduce you to the principles, processes and practices of project management over the life cycle of a capital investment project. It covers all phases of the project development process, including, business planning and strategy, front-end development, implementation and operational readiness, and handover for start-up and operation. The course particularly focuses on the following key competencies: Evaluating and framing investment opportunities
- Managing front-end engineering activities
- Identifying and managing project risks
- Developing commissioning and start-up plans
- Handover and close-out work
- Methodologies and tools for developing cost estimates
- Specifying quality assurance and quality control requirements
- Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), particularly with regards to addressing safety in the execution phase
- Stakeholder engagement
- Contracting and procurement
- Quality Management
Through demonstrable exposure to international best practices, including finance and governance systems, this course will provide you with a common basis for managing investment projects. It will allow you to participate in the application of opportunity framing, front-end loading, stakeholder engagement, governance processes, risk assessment, estimating and project controls, HSSE, contracting and procurement, and quality assurance. This course is also supplemented with relevant industry examples to help applying best practices and lessons learned. On completion of this course yo should be able to understand:
- The fundamental theories and best practices of project management for major capital investment projects
- The added value of, and comply with, the governance and project assurance requirements in a fit-for-purpose manner
- How to effectively contribute to the activities of major capital investment projects and be able to scale down the process for smaller projects
