    Programme Aims:

    This programme has been designed with a syllabus that offers learners the opportunity to improve their knowledge and understanding of public management, the environment within which it operates, and the distinctive role of public sector organisations. This programme has six elective streams: Public Management, Healthcare Management, Local Government, Law and the Administration of Justice, Management and Human Resource Management.

    Entry Requirement

    A Leaving Certificate with minimum of grade C in two Higher Level (Honours) papers and grade D (Higher or Ordinary) in four other subjects. Subjects passed must include Irish, English, and a Third Language. Learners of mature years, that is learners who are 21 years of age on the 1st January of the calendar year of entry, may be matriculated by the IPA for the purpose of entering a programme of study.

    Examinations

    Learners are assessed by means of assignments given through the year and final examinations. Examinations are held twice yearly in April and August (Supplementary).

    Examining Body

    The Institute of Public Administration (I.P.A.), 57-61 Lansdowne Road, Dublin 4. UCD accredits the BA (Hons) programme. The BA (Hons) is positioned at Level 8 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners who successfully complete Year One of the programme will receive an interim award of a UCD Certificate in Public Management. Those who successfully complete year Two will receive a UCD Diploma in Public Management and those who successfully complete year Three and Four will receive a UCD BA (Hons) Degree. Students who gain advanced entry into the BA (Hons) Degree programme at Year Three and Four directly will receive their award from the National University of Ireland.

    Year Two – Core Subjects

    Plus Elective Stream

    This subject is not taken by students in the Law and Administration of Justice and Healthcare Management streams.

    Year Two will commence in September 2015 and streams will be offered subject to demand and viable numbers. After first year there are six elective streams: Public Management, Healthcare Management, Local Government, Law and the Administration of Justice, Management and Human Resource Management. In 2015/2016 it is anticipated that the Core Subjects for year two for all streams will be available in the Department of Business Management at Limerick Institute of Technology. Electives will be provided subject to demand and viable numbers. Where lectures are not provided in any given stream learners can pursue their elective subjects through Distance Education directly with the Institute of Public Administration. The Degree programme is available at honours level and takes four years to complete. Year Three and Four will not commence until the academic years 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 respectively.

    About LIT

    Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) is an institute of higher education in Limerick, a modern urban city in the Mid-theyst region of Ireland and is one of 13 institutes that are members of the Institutes of Technology, Ireland (IOTI). LIT is the ftheirth largest IOT in Ireland, with more than 6000 full time and part time students and 500 staff.

    The Institute has five campuses and a learning centre across Limerick city, Tipperary and Clare. The main campus is located at Moylish Park, with two city centre campuses in Clare Street and Georges Quay in Limerick city. LIT in Tipperary is based in two campuses -Thurles and Clonmel. The LIT Ennis Learning Centre is based in the museum in Ennis town centre.

    Educational Philosophy

    LIT has a distinctive approach to Teaching and Learning known as the Active Learning philosophy. Whatever discipline area is offered the core methodology is active and practical; lab work, studio work, case studies, field visits, group assignments and more. 

    This approach to teaching and learning is embedded in assessment strategies and campus development so that the learning environment reflects the identity of LIT. It is also underpinned by staff developments, e.g. workshops and an online repository of active learning strategies.\

    History

    The genesis of LIT was the Limerick School of Ornamental Art set up in 1852 when the Athenaeum Society started a School of Arts and Fine Crafts in Limerick. In 1963 a series of technical colleges, to be known as Regional Technical Colleges (RTCs) was announced by the then Minister for Education, Patrick Hillery and the first of the RTCs theyre opened in Athlone, Carlow, Dundalk, Sligo and Waterford in 1970. 

    A regional technical college for Limerick follotheyd in 1974, initially under the name Limerick College of Art, Commerce and Technology (CoACT). CoACT was upgraded to Institute of Technology status in 1997, along with the restof the RTCs. In 1999 LIT was awarded delegated authority by the Higher Education and Training Awards Council, which allows the institute to award its own bachelors, masters and doctorates degrees.
