Project management has traditionally been associated with engineering and construction industries. Now, however, it is recognised as a very effective approach to organising team work in all types of organisation. This programme offers managers at every level an understanding of project management and the proven techniques for planning, undertaking and completing projects.

This course is aimed at Rirst-Line and Project Managers, Team Leaders, New Managers and Managers seeking to update their knowledge and skills in the area of project management.

Day 1 - Planning And Monitoring Projects

A group exercise demonstrating the need for teamwork and project management to effectively deliver results within resource constraints

Introduction to project management:

The development of modern project management

Overview of project management based on PMBOK standard (the US Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge)

Review of current best practice

Project definition:

The KISS principal

Project scope

Defining the deliverables

Identifying the stakeholders

The role of the sponsor/manager/team

Agreeing the reporting procedures

Project planning:

Identifying milestones

Work breakdown schedule

Defining task relationships

Resources and estimation

Risk, contingency and costs

The critical path and resource levelling

The Project Manager's Duties:

Base-lining and progress reporting

Reviewing milestones

Managing change and the use of action programmes

Project slippage and effective corrective action

Feedback to Stakeholders

Project review, verification and validation

Day 2 - Using Microsoft Project

Microsoft Office Project 2010 Fundamentals:

Project 2010 Basics

  • Match Microsoft Project 2010 products with their features
  • Identify component parts of the Microsoft Project 2010 interface

Data Manipulation, Views and Reports

  • Identify options in the new project task pane
  • Identify predefined filters
  • Create a custom filter
  • Identify predefined groups

Project Updates, Tracking and Conflicts

  • Identify Project 2010 updating options
  • Identify task updating options
  • Identify features of project tracking using baseline values

Microsoft Office Project 2010 Proficient User:

Advanced Tables, Views and Reports

  • Identify features of earned value tables
  • Create a custom table
  • Identify options for manipulating custom fields

Consolidation and Resource Sharing

  • Create a consolidated project
  • Identify options for sharing a resource pool

Interaction with Project Server

  • Identify applications associated with Microsoft Project Server 2003
  • Save a web based project file to the Project Server
  • Identify options to manage the Enterprise Resource Pool

Workshop: A simple project using Project 2010:

Programme Output

Each participant will:

  • Produce a simple Project Plan based on the Crab Island Exercise to demonstrate the application of the tools and techniques presented
  • Receive a full set of handouts and CD-ROM of all the presentation and course materials.
