Who this class is for

Does your child enjoy technology and science? Is your child curious about how things work?  This fun class allows children to expand their minds with a gentle introduction to computer programming.  This class uses the LOGO language which was designed specifically for teaching kids how to program. Programming in LOGO is like playing a game of Simon Says. Your child will tell a turtle to move, draw, and write things on the screen. This class is aimed at elementary school aged children about 7 to 11 years old.

What your child will learn

Your child will learn to tell the turtle how to draw lots of shapes, make simple animations, and play games. Each new project we work on is like a fun puzzle that needs to be solved. Doing each programming project is like solving a fun brain teaser. The effects of this class are that your child will learn about problem solving and logical thinking, and perhaps plant the seed for loving science, math, technology, and engineering. Your child will become familiar with some fundamentals of computing and computer science.

With our development environment, your kid can share pictures of what the turtle draws and share the code they have written. This means that kids can collaborate on coding projects and share pictures of what they have accomplished.

How to take this class

This class is best used on a laptop or desktop computer. The class can be viewed on a tablet as well, but there will not be enough space to type commands while watching videos. To get the most out of this class requires having two web browsers open side by side- one to watch videos and the other to type code shown in the videos.
