Course details

This professional photography Level 6 course is about photography as a business - for those that see photography as a profession and wish to work as professional photographers or incorporate these visual skills in a career in the media, design, science, business, third world development projects etc.

Art, advertising, commercial, portrait, fashion and black and white photography will be explored - both on location and studio photography in a pro workshop environment. Emphasis is on 'hands on' digital photography in different formats and modern techniques of digital image processing and printing . Black and white photography as well as creative darkroom techniques using conventional film are part of the course. Another focus is on commercial photography and the business of professional photography including the sale of images in the international stock photography market via websites and on-line photo agencies.

This professional photography course is divided equally into workshop style lectures with demonstrations and practical photography commercial and lifestyle assignments in exiting locations. The emphasis is on practical experience with 'real life' type photographic assignments. On local field trips the students are encouraged to engage in landscape photography focusing on the special light and the artistic structures, shapes and tones of the shores and Islands of Clew Bay.

Award

Successful completion of this course will result in a FETAC/QQI Level 6 Certificate in Photography, 6M3732.

Level 6 Photography modules (8 modules required)

  • History of Photography - This module explores the technical, theoretical and cultural influencs on photography from its invention to present day.
  • Fashion Photography - Fashion and Hair photography in the photographic studio and on location.
  • Digital Imaging - computer processing and digital editing with Photoshop CS6 and Aperture 3 software and Inkjet printing. Creative computer imaging techniques.
  • Creative Darkroom Techniques - developing and printing black and white film the conventional way.
  • Advertising Photography - commercial still life in the studio, architecture, corporate and lifestyle shoots on location. The focus is on photography as a business.
  • Fine Art Photography - photography as an art form and preparation for photo exhibitions.
  • Portrait Photography - the art and techniques of professional portrait and wedding photography.
  • Communications

The photography teacher is a professional photographer with years of experience in the business of photography which will also be discussed as part of the curriculum. This professional photography course focuses on practical, technical, creative and business skills required in the real world of professional photography.

  • Photography Level 6 course entry requirements:

a)FETAC Level 5 Photography and Interview

b) Other relevant academic qualification such as FETAC Level 5 Art, Graphic Design etc. and Interview with photography portfolio

c)Mature students (23 or over) Interview with photography portfolio

Assessment - Continual assessment of practical photographic assignments, projects and collections of work throughout the year.
