Hi, I'm Dave Fox -- a writing and humor coach, bestselling author, and kind of weird, really short, Norwegian-speaking American who lives in Singapore. You might be wondering: "Why is this freak giving away his humor writing workshop at such a massive discount? What's the catch?"
Here's the deal: I've been offering this online workshop for several years in a different format. The previous version existed as written lessons and MP3 audio files -- no videos. I've got two other writing courses on Udemy already (personal travel journaling, and travel writing for publication) and I am now formatting my humor writing course for Udemy as well.
I need some beta testers, and fun people to get the party started in our online Comedy Lab discussion forums. More than 300 people have signed up already, and I'm letting a few more cool people like you sneak in for just $49. But the price will increase as enrollment increases.
You'll find more information below about what you'll get right now, and what's on the way soon. But first, let's chomp into this tasty course description...
Contrary to popular belief, a "sense of humor is not a magical "gift a few special people are born with. Humor and writing are skills anyone can develop.
In this online workshop, award-winning humorist and bestselling author Dave Fox teaches you how!
Discover the techniques professional comedy writers use to write consistently funny material. You'll learn how to think, write, and be funnier.
Each lesson includes specific techniques and exercises to incite maximum laughs. We'll focus on writing humor columns, personal essays, and creative non-fiction. The skills you learn can be applied to humor of all sorts: stand-up and sketch comedy, cartooning, script writing, and more.
Full-blown comedy might or might not be your goal. Perhaps you want to take more serious forms of writing fiction, feature articles, blog posts, travel writing, children's stories, personal memoirs even office memos, cover letters, or devilishly sexy personal ads and sprinkle in some giggles. Whatever genres you write in, this class will help you infuse more laughter into your work.
This course is also wildly useful for people who do any kind of public speaking, who want to keep their audiences awake and riveted to what they are saying.
So come join us in this fun and inspiring (and occasionally weird) workshop, and stretch your comedic potential to cackle-inducing new levels!
Some of the topics we'll cover include:
- The universal element present in all humor
- Proven tricks to create or strengthen your comedy
- Giving your jokes maximum impact with the right words and timing
- Stretching your punch lines to make them punchier
- Streamlining your phrasing so your punch lines don't get swallowed up in flabby verbiage. (Mastering this skill will make a vast improvement in all of your writing.)
- Learning from your favorite professional humorists
- When and why to throw away your best joke
- Publishing your humor
- How to not be that annoying guy at the party with the lampshade on his head
What You Get Now and What's Coming Soon
- Most Recent Update: December 17, 2014.
As I mentioned above, the original version of this course consisted of printable PDF files and MP3 audio files. I will be rolling out the Udemy version of this course in several waves of updates and improvements which will include:
- Adding a few basic slides to each lecture (Done)
- Adding written exercises at the end of each section (Now Available)
- A second round of graphics edits with more on-screen information. (Sections 1 through 4 are now complete. Sections 5 and 6 are on the way soon! Once these final two sections are added, the price of this course will be increasing.)
- Re-recording certain audio tracks to match Udemy's format. (This course was originally created as a series of weekly lessons, so some tracks currently refer to "this week's lesson," etc. Those references need updating, but the actual info about how to be hilarious is already there.)
- Creating additional bonus materials, including supplementary readings, a list of further resources, and a free PDF e-book of humor essays -- now available.
- Links to additional YouTube comedy clips to illustrate the techniques we're learning. (Now Available!) (Now, when someone yells at you for watching comedy videos on YouTube, you can tell them, "Hey! I'm studying!")
- And eventually, some other surprises.
Sign up now, and you'll get all of the information included in the original version of this course (which sold for $129, even in its audio-only format). Over the next few weeks, I'll be spiffing up the videos and adapting them for Udemy.
This course will get better, but it's already pretty freaking good!
Follow along now in this "under construction" version and learn right away how to be a goofishly hilarious person (or llama). Or, if you must have the fully completed and polished videos, sign up now anyway so when I do launch the final version, you will have grabbed it for next to nothing!
I am utterly positive you will not find a humor writing course of this quality anywhere for such a low price!
(And if you disagree after checking it out, Udemy offers a 30-day, no-hassle, money-back guarantee.)
