Antibiotics are amongst the most commonly prescribed drugs. However their use and overuse is associated with significantly increasing antibiotic resistance both nationally and internationally. As part of a national antibiotic stewardship initiative this online antibiotic prescribing course, which has been approved by the National Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Committee, has been developed for use by healthcare professionals.

The overall aim is to improve your prescribing and knowledge base with respect to diagnosing and treating common infections. This course has been approved for CPD credits.

This course can be completed at your convenience at any time. As you work through the programme your progress will be automatically recorded, allowing you the flexibility to start from where you stopped on your last session. Certificates for this course will be generated online upon completion of all requirements. This course has two main components:

• An interactive presentation and assessment on “The Principles of Antibiotic Use”.
• A series of cases studies, which highlight the appropriate use of antibiotics in a variety of common and important clinical scenarios. These interactive case studies aim to highlight the use of antibiotics, pertaining to a variety of clinical specialties, in a number of commonly encountered clinical scenarios. It is advised that doctors select cases from their specific specialty and the remaining from GIM in order to complete the recommended six cases.
