    This programme allows the student to combine a broad knowledge of business and management subjects in conjunction with developing a broad range of practical skills taught over the duration of the course.

    The pre-masters is a one-year full-time preparation programme which focuses on Academic English language and study skills integrated with academic lectures in a variety of business subjects. The programme is designed to prepare students for the linguistic and academic demands of business-related postgraduate level study in IBAT College Dublin or other higher education institutions.

    This programme will fully prepare the learner for further postgraduate study and learners will have the opportunity to develop the essential academic skills needed for a master's programme.

    The pre-masters Certificate and Diploma will give students the opportunity to:

    • improve their understanding of key academic subject areas
    • develop the necessary research skills for postgraduate study
    • develop confidence and familiarity with academic processes
    • improve their language skills in preparation for postgraduate study (primarily international students).

    Learning Outcomes

    On completion of this programme learners will be able to:

    • Demonstrate detailed knowledge and systematic understanding of facts, concepts, principles and theories relevant to management
    • Select and deploy accurately established methodologies, techniques, and tools relevant to the analysis and evaluation of organisations, environments and management
    • Demonstrate managerial problem solving and decision making skills including identifying, formulating and solving a range of management problems in a variety of real-world contexts
    • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of current and emerging pervasive themes relevant to management
    • Apply cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis
    • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, using a range of media which are widely used in business such as the preparation and presentation of business reports
    • Apply a variety of transferable skills in a range of situations
    • Demonstrate strategic knowledge and systematic understanding of facts, concepts, principles and theories relevant to management
    • Conduct research into business and management issues, using a variety of sources
    • Evaluate the impact of culture on corporate objectives

    Career Opportunities

    Students who successfully complete the programme will have developed highly marketable and transferrable skills. Graduates will also have developed analytical, critical thinking, evaluative and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to plan and monitor projects.

    Graduates from the programme will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of a range of integrated business functions, strategies, environments and contexts and undertake a variety of tasks associated with the effective operation and management of business organisations for competitive advantage. This will require an in-depth knowledge of financial, human resource and marketing management issues allied with contemporary impacts on competitive advantage such as globalisation. The rise of multinational corporations, joint ventures and foreign direct investment means that today's manager needs to be able to operate in a global and multicultural business environment.

    Academic Progression Opportunities

    Graduates of this programme can hope to progress onto a Level 9 Masters programme of study on the NFQ.

    Entry Requirements

    To be eligible for admittance to study for a pre-masters Certificate or Diploma candidates must have;

    • an initial degree or
    • hold another relevant qualification which is recognised by the College as being equivalent to at least 240 credits, of which 120 shall be at Level 5 (Level 7 NFQ) or above and the remainder at Level 4 FQ) or above or
    • have sufficient relevant work experience at an appropriate Level (as determined by the Programme Director) to successfully complete the programme. Normally such candidates will need to be interviewed and will need to supply documentation and references regarding their prior work experience. They will also need to fulfil any further entry conditions which may be required by the College and/or the awarding body.
    • Students must have proficiency in English to be able to achieve the programme outcomes. International students must attain an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or an equivalent.

    Recognition of prior learning will be administered according to the rules of the Awarding body and IBAT College Dublin's Recognition of Prior Learning policy.

    Mature students with significant relevant work experience will also be considered.

This includes ensuring that applicants have appropriate information and advice about the programme and the qualification and that the qualification will meet their needs. The College will take appropriate steps to assess each applicants' potential and make a professional judgement about their ability to successfully complete the programme of study and achieve the qualification. This assessment will take account of the supports available to the learner during their programme of study and any specific support that might be necessary.

    The IBAT College Dublin 'Recognition of Prior Learning' policy applies to both standard and non-standard applications.
