Course details

This programme is aimed at Masters prepared graduates who wish to gain a teaching qualification. It aims to develop nurses'/midwives' expertise and understanding of teaching in higher education and clinical settings. The programme is facilitated on-line and learners attend for two one-day workshops a semester. A one-day introduction to the programme is offered the week prior to the programme commencing.

The programme is comprised of three taught modules and three competency assessments. To support learners' skill development, they are expected to complete 100 hours of teaching/facilitation during the programme. Learners are also expected to gain expertise in a wide range of teaching methods including lecturing, clinical teaching in both laboratory and clinical settings, and working with small groups using experimental approaches.

The course is approved by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann and has a clinical focus, offering opportunities to develop specialist skills. The programme is offered through a blended learning format - a combination of online and face-to-face learning and teaching. Blended learning is an innovative and exible approach to learning making it possible to combine working full-time with studying.

Entry requirements

All applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

  1. Have successfully completed a Master in Nursing/Midwifery or its equivalent;
  2. Be a registered nurse on the General, Mental Health, or Learning Disability Nurse pisions of the Register maintained by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann;
  3. Have practised as a nurse/midwife for a minimum of three years post-registration (exclusive of postregistration/educational programmes);
  4. Have negotiated a placement in a School/Department of Nursing/Midwifery Education establishment which will provide them with the opportunity to meet the practice requirements of this programme.
