Course details
This postgraduate programme delivers a comprehensive syllabus of media skills. It is designed to equip students with the key practical competencies needed to work in a professional media environment today along with the critical academic depth of a postgraduate qualification. During the course, students will be challenged in real journalistic situations including producing articles to deadline, editing, designing and printing newspapers, magazines or creating online news content. Radio skills from recording and editing interviews, creating podcasts and running a radio station 24/7 are part of the course work on this programme. Students can also choose a range of media specialisms including Video journalism where students shoot, edit and present their own news package, as well as Sports Journalism, Photojournalism, International Political Economy and Business of Digital Media. Acquiring key media skills is one aspect of the course. Mastering them involves developing a critical depth through an understanding of essential media, communications and sociological theories. This will give students the critical depth necessary to become media professionals and more rounded communicators, capable of taking up media employment upon graduation. Students on the MA will produce an independent piece of written research by dissertation or by practice through film, radio or photography. Students wishing to undertake just the Postgraduate Diploma are not required to complete the Dissertation.
