This course allows the student to understand the concepts and principles of photography in a digitally visual world. Students have the opportunity to surf the digital wave of current imaging technology.

Award

Successful completion of this course will result in a FETAC/QQI Level 5 Certificate in Photography, 5M2094.

  • Digital Photography - Introduction to photoshop and digital manipulation
  • Work Experience
  • Image Processing - Printing techniques explored
  • Graphic Design - Introduction to layout and design using illustrator and indesign.
  • History of Photography - This module explores the technical, theoretical and cultural influencs on photography from its invention to present day.
  • Tradational Black and White Photography - Film development and black and white printing techniques.
  • Photographic Techniques - Exploration of digital media

This is a foundational photography course taught by a professional photographer and designer aimed at those with a real interest in photography. The course can be a first step towards academic studies or as a practical foundation for those who intend using photography and art professionally.

The course is a mixture of lectures, practical demonstrations and field trips. Students will be photographing and exploring the wild landscape, islands and historic sites of the Atlantic shores of Clew Bay area as well as carrying out and submiting photographic and art-related assignments and projects. The course includes lectures and demonstrations of digital processing and manipulation of images on Mac Pro computers using the latest software 'Photoshop CS 5' and 'Aperture 3' software. Students will be taught to print out their own work for assessments and projects using digital Inkjet printing on a professional A2 format Epson printer. Projects from Art modules will be submitted through portfolios.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or equivalent and interview.Mature Students (23 or over) may be accepted without a Leaving Certificate but will be required to present for interview.

Assessment - continual assessment with photographic assignments, projects and collection of work throughout the year.
