Course details

The QQI Level 5 programme for the Photographic Studies course is designed to provide students with an introductory grounding in all aspects of photographic practice. Students progress through a series of workshops and lectures aimed at increasing their awareness of image making from concept to final production.

Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate (5 passes) or equivalent
  • Applicants of mature years will be considered on their merits

Course Outline

Studio Photography

  • An exploration of various genres practised, utilising professional studio equipment & materials.

Digital Studio Photography

  • The use of digital media in studio photography

Documentary

  • Investigating various aspects of Photo-journalistic, Documentary & Landscape photography.

Darkroom Practice

  • Printing in black & white with an emphasis on the role of print quality in visual expression.

History of Photography

  • Developing an appreciation of the potency of the medium as a communicative tool.

Computer Image Processing

  • Using computers in contemporary photography.

Facilities

  • Two darkrooms fully equipped for B/W and colour printing. College Studio with professional lighting systems. Medium & large format cameras and digital cameras are provided by the college. Students need to provide their own 35mm SLR’s. Digital Suite and digital printing room. The department also runs a shop which sells materials to students at cost price.

Progression

  • Students who receive a full award may apply to progress to the Level 6 Photographic Studies programme in St John’s College.
