Course details

The Performance course is designed to give participants an opportunity to explore the process of acting in a supportive and structured environment. Students are encouraged to embark on a personal journey that will challenge their perceptions, develop spontaneity, and foster imaginative development.

Term 1: September 2015 – December 2015

Term 1 will focus on the individual, on building a foundation for technique. The focus will be on self awareness, building ensemble and trust within your group. You will begin to work with text, body and voice. The term culminates in a performance of monologues in front of your own class. In term one all groups will read a play that is currently being shown in a Dublin theatre and will attend the production on a class night. The following class will be spent in discussion regarding the production. Each class will receive a workshop in Voice.

Term 2: January 2016 – March 2016

Term 2 will introduce text analysis, character development through physical, emotional and intellectual processes. While working on scenes with a partner you will learn about performance and character relationships, investigating genre, style and period. The term culminates in a performance of duologues before all Performance Year classes. Each class will receive a workshop in Stage Combat.

Term 3: April 2016 – June 2016

Term 3 will see you focusing on the decision making of an actor. You will work on voice and speech and on performance energy. The focus of the term will be on preparation for your final showcase of duologues which will be performed for the public.

PLEASE NOTE:

A reading list will be provided at the start of term which although not compulsory is recommended reading. Throughout the year your tutor may request that you read certain extracts of these books. These books are available for loan from our library and extracts can be photocopied within the constraints of copyright law. Your theatre visit will happen during class time and is a compulsory event. The cost of your ticket is included in your fees.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry to the course is by application and interview. Everyone who applies is called for interview. Acceptance on to the course is on the basis that the student will have some prior experience of, or training in, performance. Students who can demonstrate equivalent experience in another discipline may also apply.

About Gaiety School of Acting

The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland is a Not for Profit organisation founded in 1986 by the internationally renowned theatre director Joe Dowling, in response to the lack of full time actor training programmes in Ireland at that time. The school is now widely regarded as the country’s premier training facility for actors.

Their policy is to train actors for theatre, film and television. The school offers a two-year intensive acting programme and an extensive selection of part-time and tailored cTheirses for adults, teenagers, children and overseas students.The school has been providing professional actor training for almost 30 years and include Colin Farrell, Olivia Wilde, Colin O’Donoghue, Aidan Turner (Best Male Newcomer, Jameson Empire Awards 2014), Eva Birthistle (Best Actress Lead Television Award, IFTA 2014) Charlie Murphy (Best Actress, The Irish Times Awards 2013) and Sarah Greene (Tony Award Nominee 2014) as alumni of distinction.
