Course details
Hospitals and health institutions dedicated to the delivery of quality service are pivotal to a society’s health as well as its economy. It is a widely known fact that the state of a country’s general health is directly related to the performance of the economy. For this reason, performance in hospitals needs to be monitored closely due to the direct impact it has on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the state of the economy Many hospitals and health institutions, especially in developing economies, have no structures in place to monitor and evaluate performance. Ideally effective governance structures (i.e. quality assurance and clear leadership processes with consistent management and cohesive policies designed to ensure that standards of care are maintained) must exist. The implementation of these procedures and policies in hospitals is referred to as clinical governance.
Clinical governance is an umbrella term which encompasses a range of activities that clinicians and health workers should become involved in to maintain and improve the quality of care they provide to patients and ultimately manage the performance of their practice to ensure full accountability of the system to patients. Clinical governance is analogous to corporate governance, a concept where structures, systems and processes that assure quality, accountability and proper management of an organisation’s operation and delivery of service are put in place.
This Programme will focus on a step-by-step guide to implementing effective clinical governance structures and as a result, performance management in Hospitals in Middle East and other developing economies.
A step-by step guide known as the ‘7- pillars model’ has traditionally been used to introduce, implement and enforce clinical governance structures; however, the guide in this article will be modified to suit the culture in developing economies and more importantly make it easier to sustain.
