Course details

Performance management is a process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational performance. As such, it establishes a shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved.

Effective performance review/appraisal of employees is a key element of successful performance management systems. The training of Line Managers/Appraisers in all aspects of the performance review process is therefore of paramount importance to overall organisational performance in the public sector.

This one day workshop which is a practical, skills-based programme will be of benefit to:

  • Section Heads and Line Managers
  • HR Practitioners
  • Newly appointed Supervisors
  • Those involved in on-going Staff appraisal

Objectives

On satisfactory completion of the workshop, participants will:

  • Have gained a comprehensive overview of the nature and purpose of performance management and in particular appraisal/review meetings;
  • Know how to set SMART objectives, goals and targets with inpidual members of staff;
  • Know how to plan and prepare for regular review/appraisal meetings;
  • Have a clear understanding of the necessary skills of appraisal through role play/case studies;
  • Have an understanding of the importance of: active listening skills; gaining commitment & agreement on objectives and goals; giving & receiving feedback; effective questioning; assertiveness, personal and career development planning and following-up on issues arising during the appraisal meeting;
  • Have identified pitfalls to be avoided.

The course will cover the following areas:

  • The purpose of performance review/appraisal within a performance management context
  • Practical exercises in the definition and setting of SMART objectives, goals and targets
  • Reviewing performance and dealing with underperformance
  • Personal and career development planning
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Conducting the appraisal meeting
  • Coaching in the essential skills of appraisal
