Measuring and managing performance is a challenging enterprise and one of the keys to gaining competitive advantage. Performance management systems serve strategic, administrative, and developmental purposes their importance cannot be overestimated.
Effective managers need to be aware of the issues involved in determining the best methods for their particular situations. In addition, once performance has been measured, a major component of a manager’s job is to feed that performance information back to employees in a way that results in improved performance rather than defensiveness and decreased motivation.
