Course details

This competency unit provides the participants with the fundamental and practical understanding on how to prepare materials, equipment and utilities to start up a production process. This competency unit covers the skills and knowledge for field personnel who are required to perform process line up.

Course Outline

Prepare to carry out a production process

  • Relevant regulations, safe working practices and procedures required within the work area (PPE, environmental, emergency response and codes of practice) the implications of statutory and organizational requirements
  • Safety, risks and hazards related to line up
  • Objective of a line up, how to achieve this objective safely and correctly
  • Functions of process control, including instrumentation and logic work to achieve safe and steady start up
  • Procedures for determining the normal operating parameters and associated specifications such has pre-line up check, line up and post-line up
  • Processes that are taking place, conditions and the effects of changes, including chemical and physical properties
  • Plant, equipment and process, how they link to other plants and systems
  • Procedures for accessing and interpreting drawings regarding the plant and equipment
  • Procedure for communications with colleagues, supervisors, managers, maintenance disciplines

Prepare equipment and utilities for a production process

  • Procedures for determining the effect of equipment internals upon the
  • process system (electrical stop switches, condition monitoring setting)
  • Correct start up settings and valve/damper positions
  • Procedures for determining the correct modes for equipment (electrical
  • start up sequence) auto or manual
  • The effects of loss of any equipment upon the process start up
  • Procedures for interpreting utilities and services essential in the plant
  • Effects of loss of any utility and services
  • Plant and equipment layout and its connection with other plants
  • and systems
  • Effects of changes in normal conditions during start up

Prepare Materials for a production process

  • Relevant regulations and procedures required within work area
  • Identification of materials on plant (classes compatible and incompatible)
  • Composition and properties of the feedstock, chemical additives, reagents and raw materials (to include flammability and toxicity)
  • Use of materials for start up
  • Cleaning of spillage and housekeeping procedures of waste from materials
  • Procedures for determining the correct storage of materials prior to being used at startup

Start up a production process

  • Whole startup operating procedures until optimum production (steady state)
  • Effects of fire and gas control system during start up to steady running
  • Chemistry and physics relating to the process specification
  • Plant and equipment operating parameters
  • Process and product variables (temperature, flows, pressure, level,
  • density, PH)
  • Maintenance failure/malfunctions (instrument, electrical and mechanical)
  • Work area hazards, including spillages, uncontrolled emissions, H2S
  • and other toxic substances and extreme weather conditions

Requirements

Candiates must be able to:

  • Understand and speak English
  • Demonstrate maths proficiency
  • Successfully complete an assessment test conducted by CPTC

Target Audience

  • New entrants to the chemical and process Industry
  • Process technicians or operators looking for skills enhancement
  • Personnel interested in joining the chemical and process industry
